The Lenovo ThinkPad T410s: Breaking Barriers

matthew | 6:39 pm | September 4, 2010 | Laptop Reviews

The notebook industry is becoming harder and harder to compete in. With the advent of new technology introduced in laptops by top manufacturers such as Dell, HP, and Sony, it can be difficult for any new notebook to stand out amongst the crowd. However, the new The Lenovo ThinkPad T410s has given us something to drool over. The features offered in this ThinkPad are crammed to the top. Let’s take a quick look off the top at the important specs of this new ThinkPad.

Weighing in at 3.89 lbs, the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s comes with Windows 7 Professional. The processor is an Intel Core i5 520M running at 2.4 GHz with a 3MB cache. That is enough for all your computing needs and can even extend to designing. The Matte finish LED backlit screen is to die for. It is 1440 x 900 WXGA and can leave a user glued to the screen for hours staring at its beauty. There is no lag in graphics either because the ThinkPad offers Intel GMA HD Integrated Graphics that can fulfill all your media needs.

There are 2 DDR3 RAM slots which are equipped with a total of 4GB RAM. For storage space, users have a 250GB Toshiba 1.8” Hard Drive. Of course the ThinkPad comes with a DVD+/-RW and is equipped with Bluetooth (Intel 6200AGN). You can communicate with all your friends and family members by using the built in camera that can be sustained for a long duration thanks to the 6-cell battery (11.1 44Wh).

Aesthetics

The Lenovo ThinkPad T410s is similar to the T-series ThinkPad but it seems like it’s lost a lot of weight. The ThinkPad is slimmer and has a thick port layout. The screen cover is nearly half as thick as compared to the previous models. The ThinkPad T410 and T410s both have the same newer keyboard design and the touchpad remains the same. The only visible difference between the two models is the fingerprint scanner which is now located under the direction keys on the new ThinkPad T410S.

The battery placed in the new ThinkPad is much smaller because it is mounted flush into the body of the ThinkPad. This can prove to be a disadvantage because it limits the total capacity of the battery. Those who are looking for an extended battery life, they can get the addition multi bay 3-cell battery.

The aesthetics are overall quite pleasing and the screen cover is quite beneficial when it comes to protecting the LCD and preventing the screen from distortion when pressure is applied behind the panel. The main body has very good build quality which is thanks to components like the battery, optical driver, and hard drive which add to the potency of the chassis.

The only setback is that the hard drive is limited when it comes to upgrading options. Due to the thinner chassis, Lenovo had to use a smaller hard drive. A consumer still has other options that are better than using the 1.8 inch model which is considerably slower than the existing 2.5 inch model.

Overall, the Lenovo ThinkPad T410s is a great buy. There are many other features that it offers to keep consumers happy. Keep visiting our website to read more weekly reviews of the new Lenovo ThinkPad and several other new gadgets.

Laptop as canvas for creative urge

Alexandra | 12:56 am | June 29, 2010 | Laptop Mods

Your laptop is not only a perfect working tool, it should also reflect your personality and style. This is what manufacturers keep telling us, don’t they? However, what kind of individuality are we talking about, when thousands of other people all over the world have exactly the same gadget? A young artist from Russia has decided to make something completely new out of her 15-inch Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pro V350 laptop. This was the origin of her new hand painted laptop series.

“I always wanted to do everything in my own way, like no one else can. I am painting something all the time, for example windows in the house, plates, walls. And when I bought my first laptop, I wanted to make it unique as well. In the beginning I was a bit scared because I didn’t want to make it any damage, though I’ve had ‘painted’ my Nokias with nail polish on several occasions.  I’ve decided to use my old set of stained glass paints because if something would have gone wrong they could be removed without a trace.

Then the question turned up: what to draw? I wanted something that would reflect my personality – elegant and stylish but at the same time feminine. And because I love animals I’ve decided to paint my laptop with pussy cats. And afterwards I’ve been repainting my laptop every now and then: with the pictures of girls, stars, plants, flowers etc. Laptops tend to wear off quite quickly and soon after my first laptop painting attempt I’ve decided to get myself a new one.  For my second laptop I’ve chosen ThinkPad SL400. Its glossy lid where all touches become visible hadn’t put me out – “I’ll colour it anyway” – I thought. So my new laptop has soon acquired itself a crocodile skin and looked stunningly!

But the chosen design was the way too masculine and aggressive. And the laptop itself was too manly and big as well, so I had to do something completely different to adjust it to my personal taste.   Some time later the crocodile skin was removed accurately to give way for the new décor.  It looked a bit like an ornamental iron grid. This painting job was done in about two hours, practically over lunchtime.

When I started looking for a new laptop, lighter and smaller the new Lenovo ThinkPad X100e had just been released. In spite of a number of negative moments (such as overheating and battery life) it turned out to be the most suitable option. Although many people were trying to persuade me to take a classical ThinkPad x200, I bought myself the red ThinkPad x100e. And even before I held it in my hands I already had an idea of how to colour it. And now this idea comes true:

These hieroglyphs do make sense by the way- I wished my laptop to be happy, reliable and beloved. Later I added a colour accents with the dark red paint. The chosen drawing suited the x100e very well:

The great thing about the stained glass paints is that they can be easily removed. At the same time they stay long enough – about half a year even if you carry your laptop with you all the time. Now I have no wish to redo it again but desire to create is burning up more and more. That’s why I switched to my friends’ laptops. I have coloured two Lenovo Idea Pad S9’s since:

Acer appeared in the 3D style: Glamourous Sony Vaio for a pretty girl:

And a 15-inch Asus:

And this one  was my first commercial job — the picture of the Eiffel Tower is based on the movie “From Paris with love”. The owner of the laptop liked the drawing: he has the same theme with a leaning Eiffel Tower on his mobile phone. It’s all thanks to the owner who was not afraid to give me his gadgets and who was very satisfied with the result in the end!  All of a sudden my hobby became profitable. Now I have a catalogue of standard drawings available to order but I can also design something very unusual.”

ThinkPad T410: another powerful and reliable business laptop from Lenovo

Alexandra | 12:28 pm | June 14, 2010 | Laptop News, New Laptops

A 14-inch ThinkPad T400 was good in everything: an excellent, powerful, non-killable device for working. While developing a new model, ThinkPad T410, they at Lenovo tried to improve all the main characteristics. Apart from powerful Intel Core i-series processors the updated laptop has got several new features such as enlarged touchpad area with MultiTouch support and the Gobi 2000 3G-module. The time of autonomous performance has been improved too; the new extended ThinkPad battery now provides up to 22 hours of runtime.

Performance

ThinkPad T410 is available with the Intel Core i3, i5 and i7 processors. The version with powerful Core i7 provides the maximum performance while the Core i5 models offer a better balance between performance and the duration of work off mains. These processors also support the so-called Intel Turbo Boost technology , where the frequency can be automatically accelerated.

Intel Core i3 doesn’t support the Turbo Boost technology but at the same time it is a very powerful processor that beats the Core 2 Duo of the previous generation in all tests.

Connectivity

ThinkPad T410 is equipped with the maximum set of all possible ports for connecting gadgets and devices. The DisplayPort interface to connect an external monitor has now become the standard for T-series. If necessary, the monitor can be connected with the help of the DVI or HDMI cable using an adapter. Apart from four usual USB ports (power is permanently supplied to one of these ports even when a laptop is switched off), the eSata and FireWire mini slots are in place. Additional modules can be also installed into a 34-mm Express Card slot.

Reliability

The display lid is equipped with the stiffening frame from highly elastic polycarbonate (HEPC) and the motherboard and hard disk are protected by the frame made of magnesium alloy. The keyboard is protected from ingress of moisture; spilt over the keys liquid is deduced from the laptop through special channels without touching electronic components. And, of course, ThinkPad T410 is equipped with the legendary trade-mark keyboard that guarantees an incredible comfort at typing.

Battery life

T410 is one of the most suitable laptops for long autonomous work. You can buy a laptop with ordinary accumulators that come with 6 or 9 cells. With a 6-cell battery, the machine will work for about 6.6 hrs which is not that bad! The extended 9-cell battery provides 11 hrs of work from one charge. Though that is not it, the new prismatic battery developed primarily for new T series is connected to the dock station and can be used along with the standard battery. Thus, with two 9-cell batteries at a time, the laptop will be able to work without charging for 22 hours. Both accumulators will be charged simultaneously – there’s no need in replacing batteries or buying an external AC Adapter.

The near future of high-tech industry (your excursion to CES 2010)

Alexandra | 7:39 pm | January 26, 2010 | New Laptops

ces-logo-2010The last Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has become the main source of information about new technologies and products from the world’s largest product designer and manufacturers.  The show was held in Las Vegas, and this place wasn’t chosen by chance. The U.S. market is traditionally considered as one of the most important for many large companies that design and produce electronics.

Judging by the general show trends, 2010 will be the year of Android smartphones, Tablet PCs, and rapid development of three-dimensional television. And like a year ago, at CES 2009, manufacturers introduced a lot of notebooks and netbooks in a classic form factor. Developers still believe that this market is very promising. For example, MSI management expects 50% growth of notebook shipments in 2010.

Lenovo attracted visitors by the unusual Ideapad U1 laptop. This device, which is actually a hybrid of tablet and netbook, has a 11.6″ display that can be disconnected from the keyboard and work independently as a Tablet PC. Ideapad U1 is expected in shops this summer at a price of about $ 1000.

You could see new netbooks based on Intel Pine Trail hardware platform from all major manufacturers at CES 2010. Most of those devices had similar characteristics and were running Windows 7. The Samsung N127 netbook based on OS Moblin can be mentioned as an exception.

One more piece of news from Intel. The company launched AppUpCenter, a new online store of applications for compact portable computers. All users of netbooks with OS Windows can join this service.

Among the huge number of laptops that were presented at CES 2010 there are some unusual ones. Samsung demonstrated a prototype laptop with a 14″ transparent OLED-display. It’s difficult to imagine who may need such a computer, but this invention of South Korean engineers may find application in other industries. Also Dell showed a workable concept of Studio with a 16″ OLED-display, which response time is 0,004 ms. And Asus amazed visitors by its new NX90 Bang & Olufsen edition laptop.

So CES 2010 gave us a general idea of what devices we should expect this year. Evidently experts expect the increase in sales of portable computers (both netbooks and notebooks). Marketing specialists pin hopes on tablet PCs, but demand for them will depend not only on technical specifications, but also on pricing policies.

Some of the most stylish laptops ever designed

Alexandra | 12:47 am | December 23, 2009 | Laptop Mods

For a laptop, design is not less important than its hardware insides, as any industrial designer will testify. People are ready to pay high premium for so-called “high-tech beauties”. That is why stylish and unusual laptops can be sold much faster than “standard” ones. Moreover, designers add some new features even in budget laptop models in a bid to attract additional buyers.

For example, Acer maintains this trend in such popular model like Ferrari, Fujitsu implements it in LifeBook, Toshiba surprises us with Qosmio, etc.

fujitsu_lifebook.jpg

toshiba_qosmio_x300.jpg

The first thing that manufacturers use in such laptops is  an unusual laptop body and well-chosen color combinations. They try to crack the  access code  into customers’ hearts, finding courageous colors, hues and nuances. They also try to replace standard plastic laptop bodies with titanium ones or use special mixtures to give them more shine and protect from mechanical damage. So, those who want to buy a stylish notebook and express their individuality always can find something special.

The world’s leading portable PC manufacturers experiment with new materials (processed plastic, precious wood, stones and metals). People want to stand out from the crowd, be different from each other and it plays into the hands of many companies. For example, one of the Arab sheikhs ordered a laptop with inlays from ivory. Just imagine how much it cost him!

Laptops have become a part of our everyday live; it’s not a surprise to anyone. But you can impress others, putting a high-tech gadget in an unusual body. So, let’s feast our eyes upon other stylish laptops:

Stolen and lost laptops in the UK: do you want to be the next victim?

Alexandra | 9:53 pm | December 7, 2009 | Security

lost_laptops.jpgEvery week thousands of people lose their laptops. According to the last study conducted by Dell, business travellers lose more than 15,500 laptops per week (in the EU). A researcher has found that London Heathrow has the highest number of missing or stolen laptops (900 gadgets a week).

Unfortunately, most of people in the United Kingdom don’t undertake any measures to ensure security of their personal information which they keep on their mobile computers. Lost or stolen laptop means not only loss of your device but also moral damage and loss of valuable information (not only your private letters and photos, collections of favourite videos and music). For most of businesspeople loss of information takes the form of unrecovered damages, loss of money and reputation. But nevertheless Dell statistic shows that the British don’t realize consequences of their carelessness:

There are lots of gadgets and software products that can help you reduce negative consequences of the loss of data. Firefound (add-on for Firefox and Fennec) is one such solution. It cleans your personal data in just a few simple clicks and enables you to find your stolen computer.

Firefound uses geolocation to determine your current position and sends this information to your laptop (using it like an internet server). If your mobile computer is lost then you can get into the web interface of Fifefound and get to know where your laptop is and remove all your personal data.

You can also configure levels of safety in such a way that you will receive a letter if your laptop is used more than a certain number of miles away from your location. Or Firefound will remove your personal information if criminal is not able to enter the correct password with the X number of attempts.

But remember that it’s much easier to prevent such problems than to fight them, by keeping your laptop from getting lost or stolen.

Top 5 Ugly Laptops

Christine | 9:35 pm | February 11, 2008 | Laptop News

An ugly laptop is a mystery, by today’s standards. Hundreds of people develop, improve and polish the design of any product, so when an ugly laptop is launched, it always makes us wonder how this could possibly happen. Tastes certainly differ, but you never expect them to differ so dramatically. Anyway, let’s take a look at our Top five.

5. Lenovo Olympics Limited Edition Laptop

lap04.jpg

It seems that the Chinese are so proud of hosting forthcoming Olympics that building several impressive monumental sport venues was just not good enough for them. However, while the design of their National Aquatics Center or National Stadium is breathtaking, Lenovo’s laptop leaves much to be desired.

4. XO Laptop

lap01.jpg

Although creating a cheap laptop for children from developing countries is a commendable idea, the laptop looks as if it was made not for Third World countries, but for Another Galaxy ones. We of course understand that the aim of the developers was to cut down expenses, but the laptop does look odd anyway.

3. Augmentix XTG630

lap05.jpg

Augmentix laptop reminds of the laptops of the late 80’s era. But as this laptop is capable of operating in extreme conditions and is the choice of the military, we can forgive the designers its prehistoric look.

2. Dell XPS 1730

lap03.jpg

Being a gaming laptop, Dell XPS 1730 doesn’t look business-like, and it’s a plus. But if all gaming laptops looked like that, this world would be a very scaryplace to live in.

1. Xbox 360 Elite laptop

lap02.jpg

Here comes number 1, the elite laptop beast. To be fair, turning Xbox into an Xbox laptop was a minefield of design difficulties, and it showed. The laptop is so ugly, the design cannot be taken seriously, it is just one huge prank. Hats off to the designer Ben Heck.
