CartDesk is a travelling cart for laptops owners

Alexandra | 2:57 am | March 17, 2010 | Laptop Accessories

This device is likely to appeal to those who often travel with laptops and spend lots of time in crowded airport departure lounges. It is a cart that is easily transformed into a comfortable notebook table.

The whole system weighs about 9.5 pounds but can carry a load of up to 20 pounds. The extension tray is big enough for a 17-inch notebook.

For only $130 you can have your own ‘pocket’ office, and forget what it feels like to worry about finding a vacant seat in a busy café. The only thing you have to do is find some space to sit down (the system comes without a chair) and here you are – you can start working.

Although CartDesk was recommended by the American Airlines as one of the world’s top travel products, the value of the given invention is quite doubtful. At the end of the day, it is not a convenient and compact wheeled suitcase, but quite a bulky and cumbersome contraption instead. Maybe it’s wiser to buy a standard laptop desk?

“Old books” will protect your laptop from theft

Alexandra | 5:13 pm | February 2, 2010 | Laptop Accessories

There is no need to buy a portable metal safe or a steel chain with a solid bracelet, in an attempt to prevent loss of your laptop and your data. Twelve South, the company that manufactures accessories for Apple computers, released BookBook, a new leather case for laptops. It looks a lot like an old book with a worn cover.

According to the information from the manufacturer, BookBook has sufficient rigidity to protect your notebook from mechanical damage, and soft interior finish to keep the laptop scratch-free.

Cover of this case is decorated with leather subjected to artificial aging, so each BookBook gets some exclusivity (it’s a vivid example of handicraft). The Twelve South Company offers two variants of its hardcover case for 13 and 15-inches Apple laptops. But nothing prevents you from using BookBook for any other mobile computer. You can check if your laptop fits it:

Moreover, by paying $ 80 for a new accessory for your MacBook or MacBook Pro you also get theft protection, because thieves don’t like books as much as modern laptops. :)

Your Personal Cocrouch

“Small” is today’s technology’s favourite word. “Small” is almost a synonym to “captivating”; you manage to turn an already small thing into a tiny one and you are the man of the hour, the hero, the genius. Looks like the fame of these “minimizers” keeps designers awake at night. Otherwise it’s hard to explain why 2 ultra-small pointing devices have appeared lately.

slider-penq.jpgSwiftpoint SLIDER fits around the thumb and is claimed to fulfill all functions of the mouse. It is however doubtful that this slider will be able to replace a standard mouse. If it does, you’ll have to hit the space button with you forefinger or your long finger which will remind of playing the piano rather than typing.

it_click_click_02d.jpg“I-T” Click, Click is controlled with the index finger and again – the thumb. The upper button is supposed to function as the left key and the left one – as the right key, which is indeed confusing. Besides, it is so small that a poodle can swallow it.

Conclusion: “small” does not always go side-by-side with “sensible” or “convenient”. Small cars do not survive in accidents, tiny cell-phones have buttons that only Thumbelina can push, and thin laptops can be accidentally thrown out with a pile of old magazines.

Speakers From Hell

Christine | 2:56 am | March 12, 2008 | Laptop Speakers

The idea of hell for some people is a boiling cauldron where sinners are destined to be cooked alive, over and over again, with occasional interruptions for tortures involving horrible demons with hot spiky tails and bad breath.miidio.jpg

A neighbour listening to unbearably loud and tasteless music is my idea of hell. And it seems that with today’s technology this hell is getting even more dreadful. Inventing Omnivox and Whispering Windows was the first step to providing sound junkies with devices that can turn any surface, be it a window or a desk, into huge speakers – and providing people who secretly hate their uncontrollable neighbours with headaches and nervousness.

MiidioTM Speakers are a similar product, but with better quality sound and ability to function on any surface. And hell would be very close indeed if it were not for one small thing: a window or a coffee table, on which any of these gadgets can be placed, wouldn’t withstand heavy bass or high pitch music and will break into pieces. Which means that dancing to Joy Division is always going to be better with good old amplifier and powerful speakers.

A Mouse For Ecomaniacs

Christine | 4:30 am | March 5, 2008 | Green Laptops, Laptop Accessories

If you were asked to name the person who had invented electricity, you’d probably say it was Benjamin Franklin who flew his kite during a thunderstorm. Yet, experts say that there was a whole range of scientists who contributed to this discovery, and that Franklin discovered only the interrelation between lightning and electricity.

Singaporean developers have now found interrelation between laptop heat and a laptop mouse and have presented a concept mouse that doesn’t need to be recharged. A special mouse pad that is placed under the laptop collects excessive heat and miraculously turns it into electricity, which is used to power this DORmino mouse. Thanks to magical silicon nanowires, it promises to provide us with 100% eco-friendly mouse.

dormio.jpg

This being a mouse however, friendship will most likely be a quick, one-sided affair. Replaced by hate when the mouse stops working because the window is open and there is not enough heat around. And you will have to boil it in a kettle, and then roast over fire a bit, until it becomes black and smelly and you throw it out of the window along with the magical nanowire mouse-pad.

This is what can happen when a simple and effective device is replaced by a complicated and expensive one, even for the noble cause of saving polar bears. There is a difference between being eco-friendly and eco-obsessed, and DORmino looks more like the second.

10 Handmade Laptop Accessories You Can Buy On Etsy.com

maksim | 11:07 pm | February 21, 2008 | Laptop News

Etsy.com is a great source of unique, unusual, ecologically correct things to buy. In case you never heard of it, it works somewhat similar to eBay, everybody can buy anb sell everything. The only requirement is that the product has to be handmade.

We have scanned the website in search of laptop accessories. There are lots. Here is our 10.

10. Macbook Air Envelope. Everybody has already seen a manila envelope. Manila envelope is a terrible choice, it does not protect against damage and it will attract thiefs, since now people expect envelopes to contain laptops instead of letters. This one is discreet, safe against impact, and will fit many other laptops with 13″ screen or smaller.

Bath And Spa For Your Office

Sasha | 1:45 am | February 13, 2008 | Uncategorized

A toilet seat has 400 less germs than a usual keyboard of a public computer, researchers of the University of Arizona have claimed. Which means there are probably more real viruses on your computer than virtual ones.

I personally feel a bit of disgust touching a mouse of a public internet café that has a million fingerprints on it, with people eating, drinking, coughing and sneezing right next to me. Is there an antivirus, a real one?

mouse.jpg

The simplest way of protection is the regular use of cleaning wipes. However, there is a better solution – washable laptop accessories, Belkin washable mouse and flexible silicone keyboard.

Both the mouse and the keyboard are absolutely water-resistant and can be rinsed under the running tap water. The germs will be wiped out of existence, and spilled coffee will not be a problem anymore.

A Mouse With a Twist

Christine | 2:47 am | February 6, 2008 | Laptop Accessories

mice.jpgSome laptop users neglect computer mice, and there’s a good reason for it: at the end of the working day the wrist always aches – if it doesn’t, it must be an artificial one. It’s well-known that we owe these wrist aches to the unnatural horizontal position of the hand holding the mouse which keeps joints strained.

There have been some rather radical suggestions for eliminating tension reflected in a couple of oddly-shaped mice, such as Microsoft Natural Wireless Laser Mouse 6000, AirO2bic or Zero Tension Mouse. However, there’s no optimal solution. Or just hasn’t been before.

Lite-On Technology has introduced the concept of a new Moldable Mouse made from special non-toxic clay: it can bend, twist and stretch, it can take any form, but it cannot break. In our today’s world, where all customizable things are welcome, this concept is very likely to be popular. A unique mouse that is shaped to fit your unique hand, and to fit it the way you like it, is something that will probably be a must-have.

However, due to the uncommonness of the material, we can scarcely believe that the mouse will definitely look and function as it is claimed to, so we can only hope that such an innovative concept will not turn into a huge disappointment when the mouse is actually released.

HandWriting 2.0

maksim | 6:05 am | January 29, 2008 | Laptop Accessories

On the scale of things that define us as civilized, writing comes first. You can eat with your feet, use bathtub as a toilet, and walk around in crocodile skin skirt- all these are mere eccentricities compared to social death of somebody who can’t use a pen.

Today, of course, most of us hardly ever write. But similarly, some of us hardly ever unclip other people’s bras. Skills like these are like sniper shots – rare to use, but are the ones that need to be executed with effortless perfection when the time comes.

What keeps the skill of writing alive in a battle against qwerty is its simplicity- nothing can beat a clear white sheet and a pen. What kills it is the inability to edit and store text in digital format, something that only a keyboard can offer.

smartpen.jpg

Pulse Smartpen by Lightscribe is an attempt to stop the war, and teach the pen how to type. Written text can be converted into digital format, and what is even more striking, the pen can record sound and synchronize it to the writing. Sounds weird and overdone? Here is what it can do.

The pen has a tiny infrared camera on its tip, and everything is recorded on 1gb of inbuilt memory. It needs special paper to write on, but the cost is similar to the cost of regular paper. Notes can later be transferred to a PC and also uploaded online, there is a dedicated account with 250mb of free storage for every registered user. Files can be shared between users, which can be very useful for students exchanging lecture notes.

Smartpen has a built in voice recorder that times audio with writing. Later, the sheet can be tapped at any part of written text and the pen will start audio playback at the point when this particular text was written. Students revising a course before an exam can quickly clarify the meaning of some hastily scribbled term- by tapping a term the pen will start playback of the lecture at the time the term was discussed. Journalists can conduct interviews as it was done before, with pen and paper, and later playback specific extracts of the conversation by touching shorthand notes.

Higher quality audio recording can be done with a 3D recording headset that both records and plays sound. Each earbud contains a microphone that records audio separately, perfect for far-field recording and noisy environments.

Development of third-party software is encouraged, which means that there will be more possible applications of the Smartpen as soon as it is officially rolled out in March. One that is likely to be on the list is text recognition software customised to specific handwriting and language. Which should make converting your handwriting to typed text easy.

Combining simplicity of a pen, recyclability of digital text and accuracy of recorded voice is an exciting idea. And if it works as well as it sounds the skill of handwriting will not be forgotten any time soon.

Mouse Bad

maksim | 2:31 am | January 25, 2008 | Mouse Pads

From the point of view of marketing, a mouse pad is a very difficult thing to sell. They are so easy to make, everybody does it. Competition is very tight. The only feature of a mousepad is its complete lack of features. It is as simple as a spoon. It is design nirvana, it is form meeting function to become one, 100% perfection.

So how then do you sell a mousepad, if everyone is so good at it? How do you perfect the perfect? Easy. You need to change the function. Change the reason why the mousepad exists. You need to make people want to do more with it. And that will create new form. That will create the mousepad that no competitor has, and everybody wants.

A small company from Cardiff, UK did just that, with its Procrastinator Mousepad. It is made of 50 disposable sheets, each one a unique collection of ways to waste time. Inane drawing tasks, weird questionnaires, comic creativity tasks – the mousepad makes a perfect excuse to look away from an excel spreadsheet in front of you and have a bit of mental fun.
